Learning to drive can be one of the most exciting times in a teenager’s life. For some it can be their first taste of independence. They no longer have to rely on parents to take them everywhere. However with this new found freedom comes responsibility. New young drivers have a 23% chance of being involved in a traffic accident in their first year of driving.

The reasons so many youngsters are involved in traffic accidents are many:

• Lack of experience. It takes many years of experience to drive safely and competently. Throughout a lifetime of driving you will see and experience many near misses. It has been said that experienced drivers react 2 seconds quicker than inexperienced drivers. The reason for this is that experienced drivers recognize the “potential” dangers that some inexperienced drivers are unaware of.
• Peer pressure. Wanting to show off to your mates. The harsh reality is that your mates will not spend the rest of their lives pushing you around in a wheel chair if you become paralyzed in an accident.
• The thrill of driving fast. Anyone that I know of that has decided to become a boy racer has crashed….. without exception!

Your driving instructor will advise you as to when you are ready to take your driving test. There are no set number of lessons. It all depends on the individual. However the DSA quote that the average time taken to pass a driving test is 45hrs with an instructor plus some private practice. So don’t try to run before you can walk. Driving in Wokingham can be as hard as driving anywhere else. Remember you are learning a skill that will hopefully stand you in good stead for the rest of your life.

I have to say that most youngsters dont take driving very seriously at all. It only takes one mistake and that could be it!

Sound advise. Some young drivers drive as though they’re invincible. Unfortunately it may take an accident before they realise that they are not.

“Safe driving”, interesting…. who decides who is safe?
Even the best drivers in the world can have accidents.

Isn’t safe driving something that should be drummed into kids at a young age. It should start in the classroom long before they take to the road.

Talking of safe driving has anyone noticed the BMW drivers who think that they are immune to snow and ice????

I would love to see the government introduce a system where people had to retake their driving test every year to make sure that they were still up to standard.

I think there should be a change in the law that requests drivers to be retested every 3 to 5 years. If we had a system like that then I’m sure that there would be less accidents and deaths on the UK roads.

I was interested to hear that some people who think they are safe or superior drivers can often in fact be worse. I know my limitations and don’t try to keep up with the BMW and Mercs in the outside lane on the motorway and hence drive within myself and not be presurised as some people feel to go faster.

I would like to discuss you views on safe driving further. Are you on linkedin?

In response to Eva’s comments…. experienced drivers account for a relatively low level of accidents. It is the younger teenage drivers who are statistically more likely to have an accident. Better testing is required for them I think!!

I hear that the goverment are going to allow learners on the motorway! I do hope that this will be properly regulated and they won’t be allowed on until they have reach some level of competence?

Safe driving is something that has been missing from the UK driving test for years. It scares me that some youngsters are passing their driving tests without ever experiencing – night driving, country roads, rush hour traffic, motorway driving, driving in the rain, snow and ice!
